ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Speaking to WEEI.com while leaving the Vinoy Hotel and Resort Monday morning, Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said that he feels there won't be any significant transactions prior to pitchers and catchers reporting Sunday.
"I wouldn't expect any major moves between now and Sunday," Cherington said. "We're still working on some stuff. Certainly the spring training roster is mostly what it's going to be."
According to multiple reports, Bruins defenseman Johnny Boychuk has agreed to a three-year contract extension. The deal, according to TSN's Bob McKenzie, is worth an annual average value of $3.36 million. Boychuk is playing out a two-year, $3.75 million deal and would have become an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season.
When asked by reporters in Fort Myers, Fla. Wednesday if Carl Crawford might miss the first few weeks of the regular season, Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said the scenario was a distinct possibility. Crawford underwent surgery on his left wrist in January, with the organization suggesting at the time the outfielder might miss Opening Day.
"I wouldn't be surprised if Carl's a few weeks into the season before he's really ready to go,'' Valentine said. "I wouldn't be surprised, nor disappointed if that's what nature dictates as the healing process."
According to multiple reports, left-handed reliever Hideki Okajima has failed his physical with the Yankees and will not be part of New York's spring training camp. The reports suggest the 36-year-old's minor-league deal, signed this offseason, would be voided.
According to a source with knowledge of the situation, the spring training roster sent out by the Red Sox Thursday -- which includes 64 total players -- is most likely a group that will not be added to prior to reporting day for pitchers and catchers (Feb. 19). The news suggests that the team will not be making any additions via the free agent market, such as pitcher Roy Oswalt, or by bringing back catcher Jason Varitek.
FORT MYERS -- In response to a story in the Boston Herald suggesting that he had not returned phone calls from former Red Sox manager Terry Francona this offseason, Sox owner John Henry wrote in an email that he had not been trying to avoid contact since the former manager parted ways with the Sox. Henry said that he did talk to Francona on Monday, and that the two plan to get together in Fort Myers this spring.
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Addressing the media outside the players' clubhouse at JetBlue Park, Daisuke Matsuzaka said that he does have a date in mind to return from Tommy John surgery, but chose not to divulge it. He did reveal, however, that return date might be closer than the predicted June or July activation.
Only Carl Crawford knew how much it was eating at him. He didn't tell his manager, hitting coach, teammates or acquaintances on other teams.
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- In a 30-minute session with the media outside JetBlue Park, David Ortiz talked about (among other things) going through much of the offseason with the uncertainty of being a free agent.
The Red Sox DH admitted that there was a time during the offseason -- prior to agreeing to his one-year, $14.575 million deal with the Sox -- that he thought his time with Boston might be done.
